Klang Valley Streets/Why I love... Shah Alam: Close to perfect
By Su Aziz

SU AZIZ talks to a former secretary turned businesswoman for her thoughts on living in Shah Alam.

Noor Reha Haji Jamaludin, born in Kulim, Kedah, has lived in Shah Alam’s Section 18 since 1988. A mother of four children, she was a secretary for close to 10 years before giving up her job when her husband was transferred to Kedah. Later, Reha and her family moved back to Shah Alam, with a tonne of household items which could not fit into their house. A garage sale was the answer. “And I fell in love with it,” Reha said.

That was how she started a bundle business (used goods) around 1996 and opened a shop four years ago in Puchong. But each Sunday, Reha can be found selling second-hand wares at the Shah Alam market.

Q: Besides living here, what else do you do here?

A: I have a shop supplying Cosway products which began two years ago. We open at 10.30am, but I’m always here early, partly because I take my six-year-old daughter to her kindergarten which begins at 8.15am. So I am in the shop by 8.30am. Don’t they say that the early bird catches the worm?

Q: What is it about this neighbourhood that appeals to you?

A: Shah Alam is a very peaceful place. It is a very well planned city. There are lots of greens around, a beautiful lake right smack in between Section 2, Section 3 and the PKNS Complex.

Q: What are your favourite places in the neighbourhood and why are they your favourites?

A: I love to go to Little Italian Kitchen restaurant which is in Section 9. They serve very good western food such as steaks, burgers, sandwiches, lasagna, spaghetti, cakes and there are lots more at reasonable prices. For local food, I really like Ani Sup Utara restaurant. They have a few shops in Shah Alam. I love to go Section 9 or Section 2 for nasi lemak daun pisang which cost only RM1. There are a few choices such as sambal ikan bilis, telur, meat and prawn kari. This nasi lemak reminds me of those sold in my hometown, Kulim in Kedah. There, it is only 50 sen per packet. For Thai food, I love to go to Serai Restaurant which is at Section 3. I simply love the tomyam and their dessert of water chestnut in coconut milk.

Q: If you have to describe the neighbourhood in less than 30 words, what would you write?

A: This neighbourhood is 99 per cent perfect. It only lacks cinemas. If we want to watch movies, we have to go to Summit Subang Jaya, Sunway Pyramid or Mid Valley. It is a little far. On the plus side, the crime rate here is low.

Q: What are your most fondest memory of this neighbourhood?

A: Having my four kids here. I’ve lived here since I was 22 years old so there are a lot of asam garam (bitter sweet memories) for me here.

Q: Are there any secrets about the neighbourhood you would like to share with us?

A: If I tell you the secret, it will not be a secret any more, right?
